Classic Cagers Collection
Basketball players were originally referred to as “Cagers.” This was a result of wire mesh or chicken wire that surrounded the entire court to speed up the game. The cage resulted in an aggressive style of play. Players often received cuts, bruises and even infections from the rusting wire. Although the use of cages was abandoned by 1933, the term Cagers still applies to basketball players as a nod to the past by those who pioneered the game.
